Fjuul was one of very few pedometer (step counter) apps on iOS in early 2010s. The concept was novel and fresh back then when activity are tracked and translated to meaningful exercise recommendation.

Functionality and concept

There were three level of activeness which were corresponding to blue, green and orange color. User’s steps were recored along with relevant data such as type of activity, burnt calories, duration. From which, the app encourage user to keep exercise to maintain in optimal activity level via push notification or vivid in-app visualisation.

Although the app functionality might sounds unremarkable in today market, in early 2010s simple and functional pedometer app was still a novelty.

Visual design

Flat design with smooth colour transition was highlight of Fjuul. It was a breath of fresh air in early 2010s when skeuomorphic UI were dominating.

The whole screen was used as an indicator for activity intensity via smooth color gradients. Soft and gradual color transition was used to reflect the change in body rhythm. Throughout the day, the “fjuul ring” will be filled up with “burnt” calories (orange fluid) from exercises and activities.

In this 2013 release app, I had started to experiment with 3D model as illustration for various tutorial/info screens.

Reception

Fjuul was greatly appreciate upon its release. Our customer which was owner of the app was surprised by its success. The app quickly climbed up to first place Finnish app store’s health & fitness category in 2013. Subtle yet fresh design were often praised in many app reviews.
